Stocked Southern Pantry

I have been asked several times from newly married couples to seasoned cooks, what do I need to stock my pantry? I made a list in my second cookbook of all the items you need for a stocked pantry. Why do you need a stocked pantry? Because if you have a stocked pantry then you can easily whip up a meal, dessert, and snack at any time.

Dry Goods

All-purpose flour                    Self-rising flour               Self-rising cornmeal

Stone-ground cornmeal        Stone-ground grits         Light brown sugar

Pure cane sugar (white sugar)

Baking powder
                        Baking soda

Cornstarch                               Panko bread crumbs        Powdered unflavored gelatin

Jasmine or long-grain white rice                                    Dried beans (red and large white limas)

Dried fruits (apples, peaches, and cranberries)

Nuts (pecans, pistachios, almonds, and peanuts)

Chocolate (semi-sweet, dark, milk, and white)

Cocoa (unsweetened and dark)

Pasta (spaghetti, gnocchi, shells, and acini di pepe)

Coffee beans and ground coffee

Sweetened shredded coconut  Tea (black and green)    Garlic

Yellow onions
                              Sweet potatoes

Canned Goods

Beans (black, lima, and butter)

Coconut milk

Tomatoes (whole, diced, paste, and sauce)

Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce

Spices and Herbs

Cayenne pepper
          Dried dill
      Dried parsley
           Italian seasoning

Crushed red pepper flakes               Cinnamon sticks    Ground cinnamon

Pure vanilla extract     Fine sea salt
                                  Cracked black pepper

Garlic powder               Onion powder                              Smoked paprika

Ground coriander        Ground cumin
                               Chili powder

Liquids

Extra-virgin olive oil
       Vinegar (rice and balsamic)      Worcestershire sauce

Soy sauce
                           Dry white wine

Maple syrup (keep refrigerated after opening)                  Honey

Stock (chicken and beef)  Broth (chicken)

Condiments:

Mayonnaise                         Natural peanut butter                Sriracha hot chili sauce

Stone-ground mustard

Here are some meal you can make with the items above.

Chili– add beef

Spanish Bean Soup– add sausage and ham

Olive Oil Biscuits and Tomato Gravy– add milk

Here are some desserts-

Oatmeal Lace Cookies– add butter and eggs
