Trolley Tour, Lobster, and Cannolis

I could not have visited Boston without trying as many lobster dishes as I could.  As my family, Chase (my sister’s fiance), and I were on a trolley tour, the tour guide pointed out James Hook Company as being one of the best spots for lobster rolls. Guess what that means? We cut out tour early and hopped off for lunch.

James Hook Co. is small with a few tables inside and a glass counter of premade lobster rolls, crab cakes, and more.  There is also a spot where you can pick your own lobster. Chase found his haha!

On the menu at James Hook Co. is lobster rolls of course and in which they are known for. You can also get crab rolls. There are three different types of soups- lobster bisque, clam chowder, and shrimp and corn chowder.  Then you can get whole cooked lobster.

We had to have the lobster roll, clam chowder, and whole lobster.  Their lobster roll was actually my favorite of the whole trip. The clam chowder was good and the whole lobster with the drawn butter was delish!  The cool thing about James Hook Co. is that you don”t have to be in Boston to try all of this. You can order everything from their clam chowder to live lobsters from their site and sent to your home. www.jameshooklobster.com

While the guys were at the first night of the Red Sox game of the weekend, the girls ventured to Boston”s Little Italy.

On my first trip to Boston several years ago, my cousin Lindsay who lives here said I had to try Mike”s cannolis. I remember the place being packed with people waiting for their turn at the counter to order. I feel like Mike”s cannoli was the first I had ever had but it would definitely not be my last.  Their cannoli had a distinctive ricotta cheese filling which I loved.  Some of the cannolis I have had after this amazing experience have been real let downs for me because it tastes like certain places fill their cannoli shells with frosting.

Along with the growing popularity of Mike”s Pastry is their growing menu. I don”t remember all of their cannoli options the first time I came. Now they have everything from a hazelnut cannoli to a cookies and cream cannoli. I am a traditionalist and had to go for the original ricotta cheese filling cannoli.

I have talked about Mike”s Pastry cannolis but I have not mentioned that they have a rival. Dave Miller, once Masterchef competitor, and I have stayed friends from the beginning. Dave lives just outside Boston and opened up his home to my family and I.  He showed us true North East hospitality. Back to the cannolis, Dave told me his favorite cannoli is found at the Modern Pastry shop. He challenged me to try both and decide for myself which one has the better cannoli.

The first difference I detected in the cannoli shells were the crunch factor. At Modern Pastry, the cannoli shells are filled to order. I think this definitely gives their shells a great crunch. At Mike”s Pastry, they have a glass counter full of already filled cannolis. Their shell was not as crunchy.  For the fillings, both have a ricotta cheese filling but Mike”s filling to me is a little more sweet. I kind of like the less sweeter filling of Modern Pastry. My mom and sister got in on the judging. Britt (holding the cannolis) did not care about the shell she went straight into the filling. She loved Mike”s Pastry filling. My mom liked Mike”s Pastry too. I couldn”t believe we were not all on the same page. At the end of the day, we had a sweet finish to our perfect day in Boston.
