Homemade Hot Chocolate

Growing up, my great-grandma used to make real hot chocolate by slowly mixing cocoa powder, sugar and milk in a large pot on the stove. Today, my family still enjoys a cup of hot chocolate in the cool months. Drinking a rich, creamy cup of cocoa with marshmallows seems to warm us up from the inside out.

Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces 70% cacao chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 cup raw cane sugar or granulated sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 1/2 cups 2% milk
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

1

Combine the chocolate, sugar, salt and both milks in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a slight boil over medium-high heat, whisking constantly. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.

2

Serve with marshmallows or whipped cream.

For a vegan and dairy-free version, substitute the chocolate for a vegan chocolate. Substitute your favorite non-dairy milk instead of the milk. I prefer coconut milk and oat milk.
